Map Art Build Guide · Updated August 16, 2026
How to make Minecraft map art.
To make Minecraft map art, choose a subject, pick a 128 × 128 tile layout, convert an image or generate one from a prompt, export the blueprint and material list, then build flat on X/Z and render the maps in-game.
1. Choose the subject and layout
Pick one clear subject. A single map covers 128 × 128 blocks (16,384 blocks, 256 stacks); larger scenes grow in complete tiles such as 2 × 1 or 2 × 2. Verify the location has room for borders and access paths.
2. Create the design
Convert an image with the free converter, or describe a scene in the AI Map Studio for 20 credits. Both produce real block colors, exact material totals, and a placement blueprint rather than a pixelated picture.
3. Export the build files
Download the PNG blueprint for manual placement, the CSV material list for shopping, and the Litematic file for a Java Edition placement overlay. A single tile already needs 256 stacks, so compare palettes before collecting.
4. Build flat on X/Z
Place the one-block-high layout at ground level, respecting exact tile boundaries and a consistent north direction. Mark reference points every 16 blocks and finish one tile before copying the process.
5. Render the maps
Hold a map and fill it over the completed build so the in-game map displays your artwork. Keep the build flat and one block high; staircase height shading is a different technique.
Common map art mistakes
- Starting with a multi-map layout when a single map would do
- Mixing north directions between tiles
- Ignoring stack counts until halfway through collecting
- Expecting staircase shading from a flat map generator

Minecraft map art FAQ
- How big is Minecraft map art?
- Each map tile is 128 × 128 blocks: 16,384 blocks and 256 full stacks. Multi-map artwork grows in complete 128-block tiles, for example 256 × 128 for 2 × 1 or 256 × 256 for 2 × 2.
- Can I make map art without mods?
- Yes. Use the PNG blueprint and CSV material list to place blocks manually. This works in Java, Bedrock, console and mobile editions.
- Does map art work on Bedrock Edition?
- The PNG blueprint and CSV list work on Bedrock. The .litematic file is a Java Edition format used by the Litematica client mod.
- Can AI generate a map from text?
- Yes. The AI Map Studio turns a text prompt into a build-ready map with real blocks, materials and export files for 20 credits per complete generation.
