What is the practical answer?
For a classic single-map project, crop the image to a square, choose 128×128 blocks, select Flat Map orientation and fix a north direction before construction. BlockArtLab generates a one-block-high X/Z plan. It does not currently claim staircase shading, so the workflow is deliberately flat and easier to build.
Step-by-step workflow

Crop the source to a square
Keep the subject large and remove borders that do not contribute to the image. A square crop prevents distortion when planning one 128×128 map canvas.

Set 128 by 128 positions
A full square contains 16,384 block positions, equal to 256 stacks before substitutions or empty areas. Test a smaller preview first so this commitment is justified.

Choose Flat Map orientation
The output is placed on the horizontal X/Z plane at one height. This is different from wall art and must be chosen before exporting the Litematic.

Fix the viewing direction
Choose north and mark the corners before placing blocks. Direction mistakes can rotate or mirror a completed design when viewed on the in-game map.

Review colors and materials
Map colors differ from ordinary block-face appearance. BlockArtLab provides a practical flat build plan; verify important colors in a small creative-world sample before collecting 16,384 blocks.

Image preparation and sizing standards
Use a square composition
Center the important subject and remove wide cinematic borders. Tiny captions rarely survive a 128-cell grid unless they are designed as pixel lettering.
Plan the material budget
A 128² canvas is 16,384 positions. Simplify large backgrounds or change palettes when a single color requires more resources than the project warrants.
Test map color behavior
Block color on an in-game map is not always identical to the block texture seen from the player camera. Test critical swatches before final construction.
Keep the build flat
This page covers one-level flat map art. Staircase map art uses height differences for extra shading and is a separate algorithm not currently promised by BlockArtLab.

PNG grid
The manual placement reference. Print or view it at high resolution and divide the 128×128 canvas into smaller checkpoints.
CSV inventory
Exact block quantities for storage planning. A full map can require hundreds of stacks, so organize colors before construction.
Flat Litematic
A one-block-high X/Z structure for compatible Java Edition tooling. Verify origin, rotation and north direction in a creative copy.
Java, Bedrock and console differences
Minecraft Java Edition
Use PNG and CSV manually or load the flat Litematic with compatible tools. Confirm the target game and mod versions before relying on the schematic.

Build manually from the PNG and CSV. The Java-specific Litematic is not presented as a direct Bedrock import.

Common mistakes and fixes
Confusing wall art with map art
Wall mode is vertical X/Y. Map mode is horizontal X/Z. Choose the intended geometry before export.
Ignoring north direction
A correct block grid can still appear rotated or mirrored if the build direction is not fixed at the start.
Collecting before testing colors
Verify key colors in a small creative sample before gathering hundreds of stacks.
