How to create Minecraft map art from a picture.
Minecraft map art is a horizontal arrangement of blocks designed to become an image when viewed as a map. The simplest planning workflow uses a square source image, a 128 × 128 block canvas, a practical block palette, and an exact material count before construction begins.
What size is a Minecraft map art canvas?
A classic single-map project uses a 128 × 128 block area, which is 16,384 positions. That is a substantial survival build: even one dominant color can require many stacks. Smaller dimensions are useful for testing the color conversion, but the final captured map needs the intended map-scale area. Multi-map murals multiply the width or height in 128-block sections.
Prepare the image before conversion
Crop the subject to a square when planning one map. Increase contrast and simplify tiny text because every output pixel becomes one block position. A detailed photograph may look muddy after reduction, while a clean illustration or logo usually remains readable. Preview the image at low resolution before committing to a large build.
Select the horizontal build direction
Choose Map art in BlockArtLab. The preview represents an X/Z floor plane rather than an X/Y wall. In the exported schematic, image rows become positions along the Z axis. The 3D preview helps confirm the orientation, while the 2D grid remains the clearest manual placement guide.
Balance color accuracy and material cost
Concrete Only produces clean, predictable colors but can require large quantities of sand, gravel, and dye. Survival Friendly includes wood and stone-like materials that may be easier to gather. Full Palette improves color matching but introduces more block types. Check the CSV material list early and switch palettes if a rare material dominates the count.
Export the map art blueprint
Download the PNG for a row-by-row guide and the CSV for block totals and stacks. Java Edition players can export a horizontal .litematic file and use an in-game schematic overlay. Read the Litematic export guide before importing, especially when the Minecraft or mod version differs.
Map art checklist
- Crop to the intended aspect ratio.
- Use 128 × 128 blocks for a classic single-map canvas.
- Select Map art, not Wall art.
- Review total blocks and stacks before building.
- Test the schematic orientation in a creative world.
