Flat Map Art Guide · Updated August 3, 2026

Create flat Minecraft map art.

Flat Minecraft map art places every converted block on one horizontal Y level. A classic single-map footprint is 128 × 128 blocks, or 16,384 positions. It is simpler to build than staircase map art but has fewer available map shades because it does not use height differences.

1. Choose a square source

Crop the important content to a square when planning one map tile. Small text and faces need enough room inside the 128 × 128 canvas, so simplify borders and unused background.

2. Select Map art orientation

Map art maps the converted pixels to X/Z and keeps the result one block high. Fix a north direction before construction so the finished image is not rotated or mirrored on the map.

3. Plan 16,384 materials

A full 128 × 128 tile contains 256 total stacks before allowing for empty areas or substitutions. Use exact per-block counts and simplify large background regions when the collection cost is too high.

4. Export the build method

Use PNG and CSV for a vanilla manual build. Java Edition users can export a flat X/Z Litematic. Test the placement and generate the in-game map only after verifying the orientation.

Build it with BlockArtLab

Upload your image once, compare the 2D blueprint and exact material totals, then export the format that fits your edition and build method. Unlike a visual-only pixel filter, the result is meant to be constructed. Conversion stays in your browser and requires no account.

These choices respond to recurring builder questions about exact material totals, direct schematic output, and resizing, flat maps, and large exports.
