Source Image Guide · Updated August 3, 2026
Choose the best image for Minecraft pixel art.
The best source image has one recognizable subject, a strong silhouette, clear contrast, and limited tiny detail. Logos and illustrated characters usually convert at smaller sizes than photographs with soft gradients or cluttered backgrounds.
1. Crop around the subject
Remove empty margins and unrelated background objects. More of the final block grid will then describe the subject instead of spending materials on unused space.
2. Strengthen important contrast
Separate hair from the background, eyes from skin, and text from its surrounding shape. If two important areas have nearly the same brightness, they may become the same Minecraft block.
3. Simplify small features
Thin lines, tiny captions, and individual strands of hair can disappear after downsampling. Enlarge essential features or choose a larger blueprint only when those details carry meaning.
4. Handle transparency deliberately
Transparent pixels are not currently treated as empty air by BlockArtLab. Place the subject on the intended background color before upload so the outline and material count are predictable.
Images that convert reliably
- Logos with broad flat colors
- Character portraits with clear outlines
- Flags and geometric symbols
- Photos with a simple, contrasting background
Build it with BlockArtLab
Upload your image once, compare the 2D blueprint and exact material totals, then export the format that fits your edition and build method. Unlike a visual-only pixel filter, the result is meant to be constructed. Conversion stays in your browser and requires no account.
These choices respond to recurring builder questions about exact material totals, direct schematic output, and resizing, flat maps, and large exports.
